Muslim Unity Day

April 28, 2018

ASA, in conjunction with Noor Islamic Cultural Center, the Polaris Masjid, and TASA, along with other Muslim entities in Columbus, held their first Muslim Unity Day. The event was organized by AhlulBayt Student Association, along with setup and cleanup, while other organizations brought in Muslim youth. The event aspired to bring together mosques, Islamic centers, and Muslim sects to bring unity among Muslim youth.

The day stated with ice-breaker games, where each person was paired up with another so that Muslims could meet other Muslims that each may not have gotten a chance to meet in the past. In a "speed-friendship" style with a two-minute maximum, cards with a large variety of questions were provided at each seat to get a conversation started. The youth mentioned fun facts about themselves and found similarities soon after beginning.

Next, people came together to play organized or one-on-one games. These games included a large-group capture-the-flag game, sack races, basketball, badminton, and volleyball. Drinks ans snacks were provided at all times to keep everyone energized and hydrated.

People socialized over dinner before the bonfire with s'mores. During the bonfire, two speakers, brother Matin Moghaddas and sister Fariha Tayyab, led discussions on the biggest issues facing Muslim American youth today, bringing unity and acceptance to the Muslim community, and other current issues that Muslim youth might face in the United States. The discussions were interactive.

With over 75 people in attendance, the evening ended with new friendships formed and fresh ideas about togetherness.
